The population of Nepal is increasing every year at a rate of 1.35 % in 10 years. Similarly, the imports of cereals and agricultural products have been increasing every year. Therefore we need to grow more food to feed the increasing population. More food can be achieved with better quality inputs like seed, fertilizer and irrigation.
Quality seed is referred to as the most viable means to improve agricultural production, on which the efficacy of other inputs like fertilizer, irrigation is dependent. Quality seed includes genetic purity, trueness to type with high degree of physical purity, uniformity, high germination potential, moisture and vigor, freedom from diseases and pest and noxious weeds.Quality seed should be improved variety. If a seed lot meets the certification standard it is said to be quality seed. Pure seeds are true to type, with high sowing quality, good yield potential, evenness in growth pattern and maturity. They are truly superior to existing one. Since these seed are latest and suited in the area for higher production. There will be more self sufficiency of food. It is said, such seeds are resistant to pest and disease, well adopted to agro-climatic condition and cropping system of locality. They have wide range of adaptability, tolerate to adverse climatic conditions like drought, flood and frost.
Quality seed has major role in enhancing and sustaining the agriculture production, and hence making country self- sufficient in food production. Quality seed holds the great potential to increase productivity and profitability. It is estimated that good quality seed can contribute about 20% increase in production. Thus good quality seeds are often called as seeds of green revolution.
High germination percentage and vigor results into raising of an excellent crop having adequate plant population and uniform growth. The cost of production decreases with the less chance of insects, pests and disease attack. Similarly, using of quality seeds make easier to carry out intercultural and management practices like timely irrigation, weeding, use of fertilizer, etc.
Quality seed is a basic input in crop production. All the other inputs like fertilizer, irrigation , pesticides, etc will be useless and meaningless. It has been found that the rate of production can be increased through the use of good quality seed. If it is used all other recommended inputs, production will be increased further. Not only this, quality seed is a carrier of new technology. They show good response of other agricultural inputs, thus brought a revolution in agriculture. Quality seed reduce the amount of seed requirement by about 25% which will make the farmers to save their money and invest in other inputs to raise production. Generally improved seeds are of short duration than local seeds and this helps in timely harvesting of preceding crop so that succeeding crop can be planted on time. In short , we can say that quality seed help farmers to follow good crop rotation and results in more production in a year. Quality seed helps in maintaining economical stability in agriculture field by providing maximum return or output to farmers in same input that are using for local seed. Hence indirectly, it helps in development of agriculture sector. And when there is economic stability in cultivating any crop, it will directly helps in more and more production in the country making country self- sufficient in food production.
For any country to remove food deficit problem, it should be self sufficient in food production. Food security would be there only if sufficient amount of food is produced and made available for all the people in affordable price. So we should focus on increasing agricultural production to achieve food security and for the use of quality seed is vital. Country productivity can be boosted up by using it. Green revolution in the world during 1960 – 1980’s has also proved that role of quality seed in increasing productivity is vital. Therefore, farmers in our country should be aware about importance of quality seed. They should be provided with adequate amount of quality seeds for increasing yield and ultimately by boosting production to ensure food security in the country.
